The canopy stretches 58cm across in smooth 190T showerproof pongee, drawn over an eight-rib frame of metal and fibreglass that springs back rather than breaks when the wind turns it inside out. The handle sits comfortably in the palm, weighted by a built-in flashlight at its base. Gunmetal tips, a Velcro tie, a slip-on pongee sleeve for the back of the car. Closed length 830mm, which is to say it leans against a doorway without drama.
Most umbrellas disappear into the umbrella stand and are forgotten. This one becomes the thing people remember about a wet Friday night — the glowing shaft walking them to the taxi, the small torch finding the keyhole.
